From Drought to Recovery: Syria’s New Roadmap for Food Security
From drought to recovery: Key features of Syria’s plan to support food security
Syrian Minister of Agriculture Amjad Badr discussed ways to enhance agricultural cooperation and support food security in Syria with Berik Arin, Director General of the Islamic Organization for Food Security. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD).
The minister reviewed the current state of the agricultural sector and the challenges it faces, particularly damage to infrastructure, the loss of skilled personnel, and the impact of drought waves, which have led to a decline in the production of several crops, most notably wheat, as well as a shortage of barley seeds.
He emphasized the move toward modern irrigation systems, the revival of livestock stations, the development of animal health laboratories, and support for seed production, including expanding the activities of the General Organization for Seed Multiplication, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
